The aim of our integration with St.Michaels House is to enable our boys to mix with children with different learning needs and special needs. The programme allows the boys to see and realise the ability of each child and not the ‘disabillity’.
St.Mary’s College Junior School has had a long and fruitful relationship with St.Michaels House. The two schools have run integration programmes, supported each other with fund raising initiatives and have even shared staff members; Mr.Agnew and Mrs.Dalton.
In 2006 we began a formal integration programme between our third class boys and St.Michales House. Co-ordinated by Mrs.Mary Rose Dalton the initiative is designed to bring the children together in a spirit of friendship and understanding.
We begin before Christmas when one of the Form 3 classes will visit St.Michaels House for an assembly and lunch together. Our boys get to know the children from St.Michael’s House and start interacting and playing together. St.Michael’s then return the visit to see a dress rehearsal
of our Christmas shows. We will usually have time for an Art class or P.E class together during this visit aswell. We have found that the St.Mary’s boys really enjoy this return visit and take great pride in showing off their school and in playing with the St.Michael’s boys and girls.
The success of the relationship can be seen when boys from 4th and 5th Form always come independently to the hall to see the St.Michael’s kids that they first met when they were in 3rd Form.
We believe that this friendship and understanding is of immeasurable benefit to our boys and that our integration with St.Michale’s House is one of our most important initatives.
We fundraise for various charities throughout the year with cake sales, no uniform days and other school events.
